According to the Mahabharata, when Janamejaya performed the Sarpa Satra to destroy all snakes, the sage Astika intervened and stopped it. Nag Panchami also recalls Krishna subduing Kaliya in the Yamuna. Serpents are associated with fertility and the underworld.
